2011 Conservation Works on Skellig Michael

During the 2011 season conservation works on the monastic remains on Skellig Michael World Heritage property will focus on two areas:

Lower Lighthouse Road
Work is ongoing on the conservation of the retaining wall of the Lower Lighthouse Road with the removal of modern cement mortar at the pier end. This cement is being replaced with a strong hydraulic lime mortar more in keeping with the original historic structure.

Lighthouse Platform
Structural repair and conservation work above the road at the south access steps of the Lighthouse Platform is being carried out in three sections in order to minimise disturbance to the nesting sea birds. Birdwatch Ireland is working with the project team to advise on the issue of the management of nesting birds. Excavation has already taken place on the east and west sides of the Lighthouse Platform and the major part of this work, the structural repair of the south retaining wall, will commence at the end of August and be completed by the end of the 2011 season.

All works are reliant on favourable weather conditions.
