Access to Skellig Michael: Important Safety Notice

As indicated in recent media reports, the main visitor access route to the Monastery at Skellig Michael has been severely damaged by Winter storms.

Access to the island is prohibited outside of the official visitor season on safety grounds. However, the island is in a particularly dangerous condition at present due to the damage and should not be entered onto under any circumstances until further notice.

The official season starts on 14th May 2016 and the OPW will work to ensure that safe access is restored for visitors by then. However any access in advance of that date is a trespass and, in its current state, is dangerous in the extreme. The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the OPW will accept no liability for any accident or injury cased as a result of any unauthorised or illegal access.
