The Lighthouses

The lighthouse builders constructed a landing pier near the base of the East Steps with a road leading from here along the south and west sides of the island. Two lighthouses were constructed on the west side. The ruinous Upper Lighthouse is located at the end of the lighthouse road and the Lower Lighthouse was modernised in the 1960s and is still in use as an unmanned station.

A programme of works for the lighthouse structures commenced late in the 2009 season.

  • The Lower Lighthouse, unmanned but still operational.
  • The Upper Lighthouse Road and Upper Lighthouse, now disused.
