Sceilg Mhichíl World Heritage Property Management Plan 2020–30

The Sceilg Mhichíl Management Plan 2020–2030 has been prepared by DHLGH in conjunction with the OPW. DHLGH is the state body responsible for heritage-policy matters in Ireland under the World Heritage Convention.

The aim of this plan is to protect and preserve the WHP of Sceilg Mhichíl, also known as Great Skellig.

Sceilg Mhichíl Strategic Environmental Assessment Post Adoption Statement

This SEA Post Adoption Statement has been prepared as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the Sceilg Mhichíl World Heritage Property Management Plan 2020-20301 (NMS, 2021) (hereafter referred to as ‘the Plan’). It provides information on how the SEA process influenced the development of the Management Plan.

Sceilg Mhichíl Strategic Environmental Assessment

This Non-Technical Summary (NTS) outlines the process, methods, outcomes, and future stages of the SEA which have been undertaken for the Plan.

SEA is the process for environmental assessment of Plans, Programmes and Strategies (PPS) and is undertaken in parallel with the preparation of the PPS to ensure that any environmental effects are considered during the Plan’s preparation and adoption.

Sceilg Mhichíl Post Consultation Report

This document has been prepared for the National Monuments Service (NMS), part of the DHLGH by Intertek Energy and Water Consultancy Services (Intertek). It is the Post Public Consultation Report for public consultation on the Management Plan and the accompanying SEA ER and NIS. The Management Plan, SEA ER and NIS were published on 4th November 2020 at the start of a six-week consultation period. This report presents a summary of the issues raised and comments received during the public consultation period. Where appropriate, responses to comments are included which provide technical clarifications. In addition, where applicable, changes to the Management Plan, SEA ER and or NIS as a result of the comments have been highlighted.

Sceilg Mhichíl Appropriate Assessment Conclusion Statement

This document is the Appropriate Assessment (AA) Conclusion Statement for the Sceilg Mhichíl World Heritage Property Management Plan 2020 – 2030.

The obligation to undertake AA derives from Article 6(3) of European Union (EU) Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna (the "Habitats Directive") as transposed into Irish legislation by Regulation 42 of the European Communities (Bird and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011 as amended. AA is a focused and detailed impact assessment of the implications of a plan or project, alone or in combination with other plans and projects, on the integrity of a Natura 2000 site in view of its conservation objectives.

Sceilg Mhichíl, Co. Kerry: The Monastery and South Peak.  Archaeological stratigraphic report: excavations 1986—2010

This report  is the full account of all the archaeological works carried out within the monastery and South Peak structures. It contains stratigraphic details with supporting plans, sections and photographs; a finds catalogue with descriptions and interpretations by relevant specialists; the raw data and results of palaeoenvironmental analyses and the osteoarchaeological analyses of human remains; a full account of the faunal remains; and the radiocarbon dates. The report concludes with an interim statement of the site’s significance. The purpose of this report is to make available the details of the archaeological works undertaken to date, in advance of the planned multidisciplinary publication programme.

Sceilg Mhichíl World Heritage Property Management Plan 2008 — 2018
This Management Plan has been developed to help protect and preserve Sceilg Mhichíl World Heritage Property (WHS), also known as Great Skellig. The plan addresses cultural and natural heritage issues in an integrated manner. It has been produced by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DOEHLG), Ireland, in conjunction with the Office of Public Works (OPW), and has been developed in consultation with local interest groups, non-governmental organisations and other interested parties. The area covered by the plan is the island of Sceilg Mhichíl, with the exception of the lower (working) lighthouse and its curtilage and the helipad and its adjacent store.
