UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List Virtual Workshop – 18 and 25 June 2020

The National Monuments Service, in partnership with ICOMOS Ireland, hosted a follow-up workshop for the stakeholders to the Irish Tentative List of World Heritage properties. The event took place over two mornings on 18 June and 25 June, 2020. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, the event was held online.
The goal of the workshop was to deepen participants’ understanding of the World Heritage nomination process and to give them as much information as possible to assist with filling in their application forms for inclusion on the Tentative List.
The event was well-attended from across Ireland and also included Gerry Osmond, Director of Arts and Heritage, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The following presentations were made on 18 June 2020:
- Gráinne Shaffrey, President ICOMOS Ireland gave the first presentation where she set the context for the workshops and the role of ICOMOS (Ireland). Her presentation can be found here
- Dr Brendan Dunford (Manager, Burren Programme) presented on community participation in site management. His presentation can be found here
- Clare Tuffy (Office of Public Works, Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre) gave an insight into about community participation in site interpretation at Brú na Bóinne. Her presentation can be found here
- Mona O’Rourke, ICOMOS Ireland, talked about capacity building and Demystifying the World Heritage System and her presentation can be found here
- Grellan Rourke, ICOMOS Ireland, gave the final presentation where he talked about Fundamental Concepts to consider in the World Heritage Process. His presentation can be found here
The second morning was an interactive session, focused on discussion of the previous week’s presentations and other World Heritage issues. ICOMOS facilitated the conversation, which covered topics such as the next steps in the review process, World Heritage knowledge sharing, management of serial and transboundary applications and the requirements of completing the Tentative List application form.
