Skellig Michael, Co. Kerry: The Monastery and South Peak.  Archaeological stratigraphic report: excavations 1986–2010

This report  is the full account of all the archaeological works carried out within the monastery and South Peak structures. It contains stratigraphic details with supporting plans, sections and photographs; a finds catalogue with descriptions and interpretations by relevant specialists; the raw data and results of palaeoenvironmental analyses and the osteoarchaeological analyses of human remains; a full account of the faunal remains; and the radiocarbon dates. The report concludes with an interim statement of the site’s significance. The purpose of this report is to make available the details of the archaeological works undertaken to date, in advance of the planned multidisciplinary publication programme.

Forbraíodh an Plean Bainistíochta seo chun Suíomh Oidhreachta Domhanda (WHS) Sceilg Mhichíl a chosaint agus a chaomhnú. Tugann an plean aghaidh ar  shaincheisteanna oidhreachta cultúrtha agus nádúrtha ar bhealach comhtháite. Tháirg an Roinn Comhshaoil, Oidhreachta agus Rialtais Áitiúil (RCORÁ), Éire, i gcomhar le hOifig na nOibreacha Poiblí (OOP), an plean, agus forbraíodh é i gcomhairle le grúpaí leasmhara áitiúla, eagraíochtaí neamhrialtasacha agus páirtithe leasmhara eile. Clúdaíonn an plean oileán Sceilg Mhichíl, seachas an teach solais íochtarach (atá in úsáid) agus a chúirtealáiste agus limistéar an héileapad leis an aonad stórála in aice láimhe.

Skellig Michael World Heritage Site Management Plan 2008 – 2018
This Management Plan has been developed to protect and preserve Skellig Michael World Heritage Site (WHS), also known as Great Skellig. The plan addresses cultural and natural heritage issues in an integrated manner. It has been produced by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DOEHLG), Ireland, in conjunction with the Office of Public Works (OPW), and has been developed in consultation with local interest groups, non-governmental organisations and other interested parties. The area covered by the plan is the island of Skellig Michael, with the exception of the lower (working) lighthouse and its curtilage and the helipad area and its adjacent store.

Terms of Reference for Tentative List Expert Group

The World Heritage Convention (The Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage) was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972.  Ireland ratified the convention in 1991 and submitted a Tentative List of ten cultural and natural properties in 1992.  Two of these properties have subsequently been inscribed on the World Heritage List; the Archaeological Ensemble of the Bend of the Boyne in 1993 and Skellig Michael in 1996.
