Eascraíonn an smaoineamh d’Oidhreacht Dhomhanda ó phrionsabail an cheartais, saoirse agus síocháin, a spreag gá le hoidhreacht chultúrtha agus nádúrtha atá ar chaighdeán Sár-Luach Uilíoch a chaomhnú go domhanda ionas go mbainfeadh glúnta an lae inniu agus na glúnta amach romhainn tairbhe astu.
Cuireadh Coinbhinsiún maidir le Cosaint Oidhreachta Chultúrtha agus Nádúrtha an Domhain ar bun ag EOECNA i 1972 agus daingníodh é in Éirinn i 1991. Is é an cuspóir a bhí leis ná tuiscint, síocháin agus comhoibriú idir tíortha a chothú ionas go gcaomhnófaí oidhreacht ar fud na cruinne. Den chéad uair riamh, aithníodh ag coinbhinsiún idirnáisiúnta go gcuimsíonn oidhreacht cultúr agus mar thoradh uirthi go mbíonn daoine ag idirghníomhú leis an dúlra.
